The Fallen Warrior, National Capital’s Land Sector Mourn Late Dr. John Pombe Magufuli

“Dear Tanzanians, it is sad to announce that today 17 March 2021 around 6 p.m. we lost our brave leader, President John Magufuli who died from heart disease at Mzena hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was getting treatment,” the vice president said on state broadcaster TBC”

The above quote was part of the announcement Hon. Samia Hassan Suluhu, the president of the United Republic of Tanzania made on national television announcing the death of the fifth President of the United Republic of Tanzania late John Pombe Magufuli.  The Wednesday which will never be forgotten to many Tanzanians, March 17, 2021, around 11 p.m

The champion whose visionary leadership changed the state and socio-economic conditions of Dodoma City, the national capital will forever be remembered by Tanzanians particularly people living and working in Dodoma.

First, before documenting issues and decisions Late Magufuli did on land sector to raise the status of Dodoma, lets us understand the power of the president of the United Republic of Tanzania when it comes to land. The Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977 provides that, land in Tanzania is a public asset and vested to the President.

The following are the major decisions, late John Pombe Magufuli took particularly on Land Sector which will remain to be remembered forever for people of Dodoma and Tanzanians in General;

  1. Late Magufuli announced in July 2016 that the government would move to Dodoma by the end of his first term presidential mandate. First Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere’s plan to bring government services closer to the people was finally be implemented after more than four decades of delay.
  2. Late Dr. Magufuli disbanded the Capital Development Authority (CDA)  by the Presidential Order on 15 May 2017 and its properties, employees, and activities were decided to be moved to the by then Dodoma Municipal Council. The decision was necessary to avoid confusion and conflicts in the provision of services to members of the public between the CDA and Dodoma Municipal Council.
  3. Late former President John Magufuli on Thursday, April 2018 declared Dodoma as the sixth city.
  4. Late Dr.  John Magufuli announced that he has shifted his presidential base from the commercial capital Dar es Salaam to the designated capital of Dodoma on 14  October 2019
